Graduate Global Leadership Fellowship

The Graduate Global Leadership Fellowships enable promising leaders from developing countries to pursue doctoral studies at UBC. The fellowships are to support international students showing outstanding leadership in humanitarian and development work in their home country. Graduate Global Leadership Fellowships thus open the way to a world-class graduate education for emerging scholars from countries with developing educational systems. Fellows would be supported to pursue research and study that would enhance and support contributions already made and which would be of particular use when they return home to apply their new gained skills and/or knowledge. Recipients would be individuals with an appropriate academic background and who have an established records of contribution to the development of a civil and sustainable society in their home country through professional, academic or volunteer work. Two new fellowships will be offered each year. The Annual Value of this scholarship is $16,000 per year plus tuition for four years Award Status: Active Deadline:Check with graduate program (likely mid-January 2012) Eligibility Applicants must:

• Hold a student visa at the beginning ofthe fellowship funding period
• Be a citizen of a developing country (see list of eligible countries)
• Have shown outstanding leadership in humanitarian and development work in their home country
• Be starting a PhD or DMA program at UBC in May 2011, Sep 2011, or Jan 2012
• Be starting their first doctoral degree

Aga Khan International Scholarships for Meritorious Students

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students doing their research in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network. These scholarships are avilable in countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada where the Foundation has branches. The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and 4) thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans. Preference is given to students under 30 years of age. The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources. Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. Students may obtain application forms as of January 1st each year from AKF offices or A a Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of current residence. Postgraduate Study at Centre for Development Informatics at the University of Manchester

The Centre for Development Informatics at the University of Manchester

is seeking high-quality PhD and DBA candidates to research topics on

ICTs/information systems and socio-economic development. Some

scholarships are available for those starting in September 2012;

deadline dates vary but many require application before end January

2012.

Only very high-quality candidates will be considered. We are

typically looking for those with a distinction-level Masters degree

from an internationally-recognised university in an appropriate topic

(which includes but is not limited to information systems, management,

or development); good English skills; and a relevant topic for study

backed by a proposal that demonstrates an ability to work with

academic theory.

Candidates may choose to study a PhD, for which they will typically be

based in Manchester during much of their study, other than a period of

fieldwork in a developing country. Those already in employment may

choose the DBA route, taken over a four-or-five-year period and

requiring roughly two two-week periods of intensive study/supervision

per year in Manchester. (Scholarships are not available for DBA

study.)

Selected candidates will join the Centre for Development Informatics,

the largest academic group working on issues of ICTs in developing

countries (http://www.cdi.manchester.ac.uk). CDI will consider any

topic related to development informatics although we have particular

priorities at present for work on: m-finance; ICTs and

small/micro-enterprise; gender implications of ICTs; IS methodologies

in developing countries; e-government; ICTs and civil society

organisations; ICT policy; ICT-based offshoring; ICT4D innovation; and

"development 2.0".
